It is a deterioration or breakdown of the eye\u2019s macula and one of the leading causes of decreased vision in the United States in patients over the age of 50. It typically comes in two forms, known as \u201cdry\u201d AMD and \u201cwet\u201d AMD. Dry AMD is the most common form. Wet AMD is less common and more severe.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Macular Degeneration Treatments <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While there is no cure for AMD, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eyeconsultantsofpa.com\/macular-degeneration\/macular-degeneration-faqs.html\">there are treatments that may delay its progress<\/a> or even improve vision. Treatments depend on whether the disease is in its early stage, its dry form, or in the more advanced wet form.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dry AMD<\/strong> \u2013 Once Dry AMD reaches the advanced stage, no form of treatment can prevent vision loss. Studies by the National Eye Institute have indicated that taking certain vitamins and minerals might reduce the risk of developing advanced AMD.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wet AMD<\/strong> \u2013 This more serious, and less common, form of AMD\u00a0can be treated with laser surgery, photodynamic therapy, and injections into the eye; however, the disease and loss of vision may still progress even with treatment.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Laser Surgery<\/strong>:\u00a0A laser is used to destroy fragile, leaky blood vessels. Only a small percentage of people with wet AMD can be treated with laser surgery, and the risk of new blood vessels developing after treatment is high. Repeat treatments may be necessary.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)<\/strong>: A drug called verteporfin is injected intravenously into your arm. It travels throughout the body, including to the blood vessels in the eye, and is activated by shining light into the eye. The therapy slows the rate of vision loss. It does not stop vision loss or restore vision in eyes already damaged by advanced AMD. Treatment results are often temporary and may need to be repeated.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Drug Treatment<\/strong>:\u00a0Wet AMD can now be treated with new drugs that are injected into the eye (anti-VEGF therapy) to block the effects of a growth factor that causes the growth of abnormal new blood vessels. Multiple injections are required.
